Book: Kanshiram: Leader of the Dalits
Author: Badri Narayan
Publisher: Penguin/Viking
Pages: 265
Kanshiram was to Dalits what Narendra Modi is for Hindutva - an icon. Much like Modi, Kanshiram struggled from an early age to ultimately make a mark in politics. But the struggle was much harder for this sturdy 'Chamar Sikh' from Punjab with a Hindu name.
Unlike Modi, Kanshiram had no political party to lean on. After backbreaking efforts, he founded one, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which, in just a short period, ended up as one of India's major political formations, shaking up the Congress in the state which matters, Uttar Pradesh, and beyond. This book is the first major - and very rich - biography of Kanshiram, who, on the road to success, boasted: "Ambedkar collected books, I gathered people."
Unlike most political leaders, Kanshiram sacrificed everything he had for a cause he held dear: help Dalits lead a better life. A science graduate, he quit as a Class I officer in a government establishment in Pune after fighting to restore Ambedkar Jayanti and Buddha Jayanti as official holidays. He joined the Republican Party of India but quit in disgust despairing over its lack of militancy. Kanshiram was very clear: "Rights are to be seized, not requested for." It is a thinking that shaped his life.
The victory in Pune led Kanshiram to plunge into Dalit literature and Dalit politics in real earnest. Taking measured steps, he founded the Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) to rally lower caste government employees. He also took a momentous decision - rare in politics - to cut off all ties with his family. He pledged never to return home, never to marry, never to take part in social gatherings, never to take up any other job, and "not rest in peace till Balasaheb Ambedkar's dream had been fulfilled". Kanshiram kept his word. When his father died, he didn't go home to perform, as the eldest of seven children, the last rites; these were done by a younger brother.
As an activist, he was humbleness personified. When he travelled to mobilize Dalits, he would eat at homes of fellow activists; not spend public money on hotels. With his chosen comrades, Kanshiram moved from place to place with just a bag containing a set of clothes and some items of daily use. He travelled on trains in general compartments, "enduring all the dirt, dust, heat and cold". If tired, he would put his slippers in his bag and use it as a pillow to take a nap. He dressed simply, in half-sleeve shirts and trousers, at times buying them from markets selling second-hand garments. He made his own slippers out of rubber tires. Once someone picked Kanshiram's pocket, leaving him with no money for a tonga ride from a railway station; so he walked 15 km to deliver election posters to a village. Kanshiram's devotion gave the BSP a solid foundation that survives to this day.
As his reputation spread, BAMCEF attracted tens of thousands of the best of Dalits - PhD scholars, scientists, doctors, government staff et al. Kanshiram held seminars and rallies. He re-created forgotten Dalit saints and heroes including from the 1857 revolt. He popularized Ambedkar in Uttar Pradesh like never before. BAMCEF (formally born in 1978) was followed in 1981 by the more political Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti or DS4, whose membership was open to all except Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Banias. A 1983-84 all-India cycle rally by some 300,000 DS4 activists was Kanshiram's first show of strength.
Kanshiram was no blind follower of Ambedkar. Unlike Ambedkar who stood for annihilation of caste, Kanshiram utilized the caste divisions to his advantage, building a broad platform of lower castes to derail traditional parties and sought to take control of governments. It was a bold move that paid great dividends. Again, unlike Ambedkar, Kanshiram never converted to Buddhism - probably he was afraid of offending the "Chamar Hindus" of Uttar Pradesh.
DS4 led to the BSP in 1984. In no time the new party outpaced both the Congress and the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. Making use of opportunistic alliances, he installed Mayawati as the country's first Dalit chief minister in Uttar Pradesh. In 2001, due in part to growing internal differences within the party and to failing health (the feverish pace of work led to diabetes and high blood pressure), Kanshiram bequeathed the BSP leadership to the young Mayawati. In 2003, he suffered a brain stroke, and died three years later amid allegations that Mayawati had held him a prisoner.

Kanshiram succeeded where even Ambedkar failed: stitching together a fighting Dalit network. It was no easy task. It was a self-made man who aroused the Dalits. That the BSP has its limitations even vis-a-vis Dalits is another story. One does wonder if Kanshiram would be happy to see the BSP - and Mayawati's lifestyle and politics -- of today. This book must be read by every student of Indian politics. Read more here:backless prom dresses

What women want at 'that time of the month'

What women want at 'that time of the month'
(Photo: prom dresses)
Here is a guide for men who are coping with that time of the month in their partner's cycle
It is the quiet before the storm and you can sense the inevitable ship commanded by Captain PMS slowly and steadily hit rocky shores. If you find your woman stacking up the refrigerator with chocolates and the drawer below the television with rented romantic comedies, chances are that she may be going through the premenstrual stress or what some people call, unfairly, the pissed-at-men syndrome. While you wear your shields and prepare to dodge the dynamites, do keep in mind that this monthly hormonal phase is no picnic for your female companion.
Some women undergo moodswingduring the ovulation period. Psychiatrist Dr. Anshu Kulkarni says general malice, sadness or happiness without reason is common too.
What to do
Do the dates you've been avoiding: Watch that romantic movie while snuggled in bed with her, if she tells you to. Take her out for dinner at her favourite restaurant, hold doors and pull out chairs for her. But try not to be obvious or imposing about it.
Be the guinea pig: Clinical hypnotherapist and psychologist, Dr Deepali S Ajinkya says,"Keep in mind that it is the physiological and hormonal changes that she is going through that is making her act out of her element." So try out the new dishes she might cook during these days. Wear that shirt at the back of your closet that you know she likes a lot. If she moves the furniture in the drawing room, let her.
Get her chocolates: If you ever find yourself in the situation of arguing with a woman who is PMSing, be sure to have a piece of chocolate on hand. Research shows that chocolate intake enhances the expression of MKP in the trigeminal ganglion that lowers the level of inflammatory chemicals, suppressing the symptoms of headaches and migraines.
Show sympathy: A woman, whether PMSing or not, simply wants to be assured of the fact that her significant other gets her. All she needs you to do is nod your head and say, 'Yes honey, I understand'. Ajinkya says, assuring your spouse of your presence is all that is needed. If you stand there and offer advice on how to change her mood, it will take you a while to get back in her good books.
Be patient: On an average, women have about six days of 'moody blues'," says Kulkarni. All you have to do is wait it out with more patience than you thought you ever had. Keep different cramping medication handy. This will let her know you care. Your thoughtfulness will heal her more than the medication will.
Take on some of her chores: Whether she's requesting you to run to the store and pick up sanitary napkins or help her with the cooking, if her chore list is within reason and physically possible, just do it.
What to avoid
Questioning: No woman likes being given the hint that she's acting like a raving lunatic. The worst thing a man can do is ask his partner if she is PMSing. This means that you have noticed her attitude change and are unwilling to deal with it.
Point out flaws: A very important thing to remember is not to comment. Don't bring up the fact that she looks fatter in some regions or that her cheeks look chubbier than usual. Women tend to eat comfort food when they are PMSing, regardless of their otherwise strict diet. It isn't up to you to monitor what she eats. Instead, accommodate her temporary diet changes. "It is important that the man is not critical and doesn't nag his woman during her hormonal phase," states Kulkarni. Blemishes and zits on her face, if pointed out, will add to the depression.

Arguing: Arguing and fighting with a PMSing woman is highly avoided as it adds to her frustration. Make an effort to calm her down and delay important discussions for a later time when she is not so agitated. Read more here:cocktail dresses london

How to deal with your pet's mood swings

How to deal with your pet's mood swings
(Photo:uk prom dresses )
Have you ever observed unexplained crying, excessive lethargy, depression, anxiety etc. in your pet? If yes, then your pet could actually be suffering from mood swings. Shocked that even pets could suffer from these difficult-to-deal-with syndrome?
Tanya Kane, pet behaviourist, feels that mood swings happen either due to hormonal imbalance or physiological reasons. She says, "When they enter a new environment, or there's a new pet on board or a new baby or they get separated with the owner they are attached to, or there's a shift of residence, a change in family dynamics etc, they start sulking, grieving or get destructive and disinterested in food. In a state of such mood swings, the pet needs to get active again to build back his/her confidence."
Dogs are the most fascinating animals in the world. With them around, it's tough to feel lonely or depressed. But on their days of emotional upturn, more often than not because of the lack of the power to voice, they start feeling lonely and behaving in a weird way. Pet owner Medha Iyer says, "My dog is very sociable. But, suddenly one day she stopped eating. Then she started biting and acting moody with us. She wouldn't even play with her favourite toys. When we took her to the vet, we realised it was because I'd just delivered. Obviously, my attention had shifted from her to the baby. She couldn't accept that."
Just like humans, animals have extreme days and unexplainable emotions. When this happens, owners should get more involved with them, communicate with them and, if required go for alternative treatments. Dr Vinay Gore, owner of pet care centre, says, "Generally puppies are not affected by mood swings too much since they are very playful and their needs are fulfiled. When they react weirdly if unwell, I don't call them mood swings. During mating or when the male sees a female passing by, they might get aggressive. But just like humans, even pets have mood alleviators like anti-psychotics and ayurvedic medicines called behaviour modifiers for their hormone related mood swings."
The reasons of mood swings could be gender related. If it's a female, it could be when she's going through her monthly cycle. If it is male, this could happen if there's a female in the periphery and they want to copulate. But another huge reason for mood swings is Diwali as they have high sensitivity to noise. Trainer and dog owner Vicky Sharma says, "Dogs get very sensitive, anxious and destructive during Diwali. They curl up under their beds or have mood swings. I know of many people who communicate amazingly with their pets. When this happens, the pets feel more secure and confident. Medication is not the solution always." Dr Jeya Bharath, a veterinarian, says, "Diwali is the time when most pets go through mood swings as they are not used to crackers. We need to understand that dogs are very adaptive, but take time to come out of a bad phase. Also, pets understand our moods very well. We need to understand them too. I always encourage my clients to speak to pets looking directly into their eyes. This way they understand things better. Be patient and try to understand they they they need your time."

If a dog owner, remember that male dogs are more aggressive than females and the female ones are experts at that dirty look! Though it does not make them any less lovable, try to communicate well, understand them and love your pet when s/he acts weird. As they say, love breaks all boundaries and has the power to heal. The metrics of hiring right

The metrics of hiring right
(Photo:short prom dresses uk )
Personality and behavioural assessments could be the key to avoiding wrong hires
A recent survey found that India figures in the top four countries of the world in making wrong hires! It costs Indian companies heavily (upto INR20Lakh in IT industry) for each bad hire that they make even at the lower levels of the organisational hierarchy.
Another survey found that 46 per cent quit within 18 months of their hire. Attitudinal reasons amounted to 89 per cent of such failures and only 11 per cent was due to lack of skill (which is anyway assessed in the regular abilities and skill assessments). The attitudinal deficits included lack of coachability, low levels of emotional intelligence, motivation and temperament. A bad hire wastes hisher as well as the company's time and resources. Such a candidate also causes an impact on the team's morale and achievements. More importantly it negatively influences the business in terms of revenue and productivity. The brand value of the organisation for probable aspirants also diminishes.
To tackle such issues, organisations are beginning to use psychometric assessments of behaviour and personality to facilitate better hires. Psychometric assessments can be used in their hiring process as a measure to get the best fit for their work culture and organisation.Whether it is the position of an entry level position or senior management, various types of scientific assessments are available to find the best fit for the organisation and its culture. In addition, for top management roles, competency based interviews measuring individual, managerial, interpersonal and motivational competencies provide tangibility to insights acquired by interviewers. Assessments also addresses the issue of attrition by identifying employees with low risk taking behaviour, high commitment to organisation and perceived job fit to help reduce attrition.
Further, occupational psychology also extends itself to the management of the life cycle of an employee at an organisation. It helps not only the recruitment process but can also influence promotion and career enhancement. Behavioural assessments relevant to work place can be used to effectively make informed decisions rather than promoting personnel based on previous work performance and supervisor feedback alone. There is no guarantee that an employee performing well in a particular role can transition to the next role equally well (eg: individual contributor to a team management role or internal team handling to contract team handling). A rating scale constructed on the job performance dimensions based on job analysis gives a clear and structured approach to evaluate performances. The results obtained can be further used for tracking performance, training purposes or for mere documentation.
Psychometrics plays a vital role in identifying employees who are dissatisfied with their job roles, are a misfit in the organisation and also identify the employees who seek stability and have a tendency to be low on risk taking behaviour. Personality development programmes aimed at enhancing a host of workplace competencies and tech-enabled training in workplace help employees achieve higher performance, groom high-potential employees and enhance team effectiveness.
Such high-potential employees are the future leaders at the organisations. There is a marked difference between management and leadership. Management involves administrative tasks and organising work environments dealing with complexity, planning, budgeting, staffing, controlling and problem solving while a leader typically inspires followers and works towards shared organisational culture and values dealing with initiating and adapting to change, setting direction vision, communicating, motivating and aligning people to shared goals. Psychometric assessments are once again effective in identifying these potential and effective leaders by measuring specific traits such as high intelligence, high self - motivation, high dominance, compassion, influential and persuasion skills.

Adopting psychology as part of everyday work life is now much needed. Read more here: red cocktail dress

Blankets and pillows put babies at death risk

Blankets and pillows put babies at death risk
(Photo: cocktail dresses uk )
Soft objects and loose bedding - such as thick blankets, quilts and pillows - can obstruct an infant's airway and pose a risk of suffocation, according to a research.
Nearly 55 percent of US infants are placed to sleep with bedding that increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), reveal the findings from a research campaign called "Safe to Sleep", which was conducted by the US National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other institutions.
"Parents have good intentions but may not understand that blankets, quilts and pillows increase a baby's risk of SIDS and accidental suffocation," said Carrie K. Shapiro-Mendoza, the study's first author and senior scientist in CDC's Division of Reproductive Health in the US.
Relatives may give parents quilts or fluffy blankets as presents for the new baby and they feel obligated to use them.
"But babies should be placed for sleep on a firm, safety approved mattress and fitted sheet, without any other bedding," Shapiro-Mendoza added.
"Soft objects, toys, crib bumpers, quilts, comforters and loose bedding should be kept out of the baby's sleep area," Shapiro-Mendoza said.
Based on responses from nearly 20,000 care givers, the researchers reported that although the usage of such potentially unsafe bedding items declined from 85.9 percent in 1993-1995, it still remained high at 54.7 percent, in 2008-2010.
As part of the survey, care givers were asked whether infants were placed to sleep on such items as blankets, bean bag chairs, rugs, sheepskin, cushions or pillows.
Care givers were also asked whether the infant was covered with bedding materials such as blankets, quilts, comforters, sheepskin or pillows.

The "Safe to Sleep" research campaign results advise against blankets or other coverings, recommend sleep clothing, such as one-piece sleepers, and keeping the room at a comfortable temperature. Read more here: sexy prom dresses

Youth getting into meditation

Youth getting into meditation
(Photo: floor length dresses)
Gone are the days when meditation and yoga were the business of the elderly. Today, many schools and colleges are organising optional yoga and meditation classes for children to cope up with increasing stress.
And the best part is that the younger generation actively takes part in it. "I joined a meditation class and it has completely changed my outlook towards life," says Shubhangi S, a third year college student. Shubhangi joined the meditation course after she saw a sea change in her friend who pursued it. She adds, "After the course, my friend used to bustle with energy every day and her outlook towards life changed completely. Her confidence levels shot up, and this is what attracted me to the course." She also says that the practising the breathing technique changed her life.
Dhanya Sundar took up yoga two years ago. In her third year of engineering, she found it difficult to manage her studies and personal life. "I thought that my life was going everywhere and I lacked focus," she says. Dhanya heard about the course through her cousin and initially didn't like the idea of meditation. Finally, after much persuasion, when she tried it out for herself, she says she could "feel the difference".
Even the techniques of meditation and yoga have changed, maybe to cater to the increasing number of youngsters. "Meditation is not just confined to chants; we have a lot of fun activities interspersed with powerful meditation techniques," says Shubhangi. Dhanya confirms, "Even at my yoga class, we have games and other activities. That keeps it lively." From organising trips to luncheons, meditation today is no longer boring.
Kamala Ravi, a final year college student who has been practising yoga, says, "I can feel the difference; I am active throughout the day." She adds, "Apart from mental well-being, I feel healthier physically; it's a great workout too."

"Problems like stress, low self-confidence and self-esteem, peer pressure, etc. can be easily dealt with through yoga," explains Gautham, a yoga instructor. According to him, urban environment can easily cause chronic stress to children, which can be tackled through meditation and yoga. He stresses, "Yoga gives children space, a place where they can let their guard down and understand their own private experience. They don't need to be wary and careful all the time. They can learn to explore their inner lives." Read more here: SheinDress purple prom dresses

Why you need to stop counting calories

Why
(Photo: evening dresses london)
The idea that all calories are created equal, irregardless of the food or drink they come from, is just not true. Quite simply, your body processes the energy (calories) from different foods in completely different ways.
First of all, when you eat based on calorie content alone, you are in no way taking into account the nutritional quality of your food.
People who eat a "low calorie diet" put themselves at risk of missing out on some incredibly nutrient-rich foods, like nuts, seeds, avocado and oily fish – all of which are relatively high in calories, but are ALSO packed with important vitamins and minerals, as well as good sources of fat.
Yes, I said fat. Some naturally high-fat foods are among the healthiest we can eat in terms of reducing our risk for diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other chronic illnesses. They keep us full, help our body absorb the nutrients from other food, and can actually boost our metabolism. Yep – eating fat can actually help you burn fat.
Let's look at a specific example of two foods with the same calorie count, but incredibly different health profiles: a handful of raw almonds and two slices of white bread. Both contain 200 calories, but almonds offer skin-boosting vitamin E andmagnesium, plus fibre and fat, while white bread only really contains a bit of vitamin B that's been artificially added during processing.
Why
(Photo: sexy prom dresses)
It's not only their nutritional profile that makes them different, there is also a significant difference in the way our body processes them.
Firstly, protein (which almonds are packed with...white bread is not) takes double the energy to process as carbohydrates. In other words, the body uses twice the number of calories in digesting and metabolising it. The result? Half the amount of calories left to be potentially stored as fat. If you're overweight and are trying to get to a healthier weight, this is extremely important information.
Secondly, almonds (and other plant-based, unprocessed foods) are packed with fibre. Fibre slows the release of calories into your bloodstream (specifically, when you eat 200 calories in almonds, your body is only going absorb around 160...see why calories are such a fickle thing?). Some of the calories end up in your intestines to fuel the good bacteria in your gut, essentially feeding the process of digestion. But refined white breads (and other sugary and processed foods) have had most, if not all, of the fibre stripped from them. Your body will absorb all of the calories in these foods. In other words, your body can use the almonds as efficient energy. The white bread? Not so much.
Thirdly, these two foods have very different effects on your appetite and feeling of satisfaction. Protein generally reduces appetite more per calorie than fat and carbohydrates. Two hundred calories of protein-rich almonds are likely to fill you up better, and for longer, than 200 calories of white bread. It is also important to understand that zero or low-calorie food and drinks do not necessarily equate to weight loss – this is a common misconception that needs to be broken. In fact, studies have shown that regular consumption of "calorie-free" artificial sweeteners can actually contribute to weight gain. According to a studypublished in the journal Obesity in 2008, people who regularly eat artificial sweeteners in diet drinks and other low-calorie products are more likely to gain weight. Why? Partially, because gram for gram these sweeteners can be up to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar, increasing sweet cravings that lead you to eat more overall.

So what can we learn from all of this? Mostly, that we should not view food as a collection of calories. Not only does it take away any sort of enjoyment away from eating, but it is also a highly ineffective and unhealthy way of approaching our diet. Instead, we should aim to reduce our intake of processed, carbohydrate-rich foods, and increase the amount of protein, fibre and healthy fats. Less focus on numbers, and more on eating real food.

Shoebox Project Niagara provides hope to women in need

A few luxuries such as makeup, soap, or scented lotions can help a woman feel special during a difficult time in her life.
As the holiday season approaches, Crystal Beach resident Alison Earl would like to brighten the spirits of women in need. For the second year, Earl is organizing a collection of shoeboxes filled with a variety of items including gloves, hats, scarves, chocolate, hair brushes and phone cards.
The fundraiser is part of the Shoebox Project, a non-profit initiative that collects small gifts and gives them to women living in shelters. The boxes collected by Earl will be distributed to Women’s Place of South Niagara in Welland and Gillian’s Place in St. Catharines.
“Last year, the support from the community was amazing. I needed about 50 shoe boxes and I ended up with 78 boxes.”
Because the response from the community was so great last year, “It meant that the outreach programs offered by the shelters were given shoeboxes to give to women in need outside of the shelter.”
“This year, I am hoping to have enough boxes so I am able to donate some to the YMCA,” Earl said.
The Niagara Shoebox Project appears to be “resonating with people.”
“People really like it, women like it. It’s fun to shop for someone else at Christmas and it’s not a huge cost but it does have a big impact on the community,” Earl said.
The Shoebox Project for Shelters began in 2011 when Caroline, Jessica, Vanessa and Katy Mulroney made it their mission to collect and distribute gifts packaged in shoeboxes to women in shelters across Canada to raise awareness about the risks women and face that can lead to homelessness.
The project delivered about $500,000 worth of gifts to 10,000 women at about 200 emergency and transitional shelters in 26 communities across Canada.
Earl is hoping members of the community will fill a shoebox with at least $50 word of items. If there is any question about what to fill a box with, Earl recommends to “think about all of the things you as a woman have touched in the last 72 hours.”
Donations of items will be collected until Dec. 14 and the items will be distributed to the shelters on Dec. 19.

10 must-see movies for the holidays

10 must-see movies for the holidays photo
(Photo: purple prom dresses)
As any savvy shopper could tell you, it’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping. And as any avid moviegoer would probably concur, there’s no time like the present to start planning ahead and marking your calendar with Hollywood’s upcoming holiday releases — some of the studios’ biggest and/or most prestigious films of the year.
In the tradition of another year-end ritual (the top 10 list), and with a nod to the fact that Oscar rules were recently revamped to allow as many as 10 nominees in the best picture category, here are an even 10 of the most eagerly anticipated movies on tap (opening dates subject to change).
“Annie” (Dec. 19)
An updated retelling of the popular Broadway musical, originally based on the “Little Orphan Annie” comic strip. In her first major role since earning an Oscar nomination for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” (2012), 11-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis plays the eternally optimistic title character, opposite Jamie Foxx as the former Daddy Warbucks (here renamed Will Stacks) and Cameron Diaz as the villainous Miss Hannigan. Director Will Gluck (“Easy A”) transplants the story from the 1930s to the modern day. The famous Charles Strouse/Martin Charnin score has been tweaked accordingly to include a few new hip-hop songs.
“Exodus: Gods and Kings” (Dec. 12)
At the very least in terms of its state-of-the-art 3-D visual effects, “Gladiator” director Ridley Scott’s sprawling biblical epic could put Cecil B.  DeMille’s classic “The Ten Commandments” to shame (if not also the cheesy “Noah” from earlier this year). Christian Bale stars as the heroic Moses, who heads a daring slave revolt against the Egyptian empire — and its evil Pharaoh Ramses (Joel Edgerton) — replete with a cataclysmic series of deadly plagues and the spectacular parting of the Red Sea. The supporting cast includes Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley and John Turturro.
“Foxcatcher” (Dec. 19)
Virtually unrecognizable in prosthetic makeup (think Nicole Kidman’s Oscar-winning turn in “The Hours”), funnyman Steve Carell plays it utterly straight and serious in this fact-based drama, which has already generated considerable buzz on the film-festival circuit. He plays the eccentric multimillionaire (and wrestling enthusiast) John du Pont, whose unlikely sponsorship of an Olympic wrestler (Channing Tatum as Mark Schultz) leads to ultimately tragic results. Mark Ruffalo co-stars (as Schultz’s older brother, David), along with Sienna Miller and Vanessa Redgrave. The director is Bennett Miller (“Moneyball,” “Capote”).
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” (Dec. 17)
Director Peter Jackson brings to an end his second trilogy of fantasy-adventures based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien (after his phenomenally successful “Lord of the Rings” films). Martin Freeman is back as Bilbo Baggins, who corrals the Dwarves of Erebor to join forces with the factions of Elves and Men to keep Middle-earth from descending into darkness. Among other co-stars reprising their roles from the earlier movies: Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Christopher Lee (Saruman) and Hugo Weaving (Elrond). Once again, the production design and visual effects promise to dazzle.
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” (Nov. 21)
Jennifer Lawrence returns to kick more ass as Katniss Everdeen in the first of two movies based on the final chapter in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy of sci-fi action novels. Back at the helm is Francis Lawrence, who also directed last year’s “Catching Fire” installment. Julianne Moore (as President Coin) is new to the cast, which otherwise features a host of familiar District 13 faces: among them Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.
“Into the Woods” (Dec. 25)
Director Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) brings composer Stephen (“Sweeney Todd”) Sondheim’s acclaimed Broadway hit to the screen. An ingenious mishmash of several beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales — Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, etc. — the all-star cast features Meryl Streep (as a wicked Witch), Johnny Depp (as a big bad Wolf), Anna Kendrick (as Cinderella), Chris Pine (as her charming Prince) and Emily Blunt (as the Baker’s Wife, in the  show’s one original storyline). The screenplay is adapted by James Lapine, who won a Tony for his stage script.
“Wild” (Dec. 12)
Reese Witherspoon stars in the true story of Cheryl Strayed, a troubled young woman who exercises her mind and body — in the process, also exorcising her various inner demons (haunting childhood memories, a failed marriage, heroin addiction) — by embarking on a journey of self-discovery during a 1,000-mile hike along the Pacific coast. Laura Dern co-stars (in flashbacks) as her ill-fated mother. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallee (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and adapted by Nick Hornby (“An Education”) from Strayed’s best-selling memoir, “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.”
“The Theory of Everything” (Nov. 14)
Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker James Marsh (“Man on Wire”) directs this romantic drama about the young Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne), the future world-famous theoretical physicist and author of “A Brief History of Time.” Set in the 1960s during his years at Cambridge University, when he was already struggling with the ravages of a debilitating neurological disorder, the movie focuses on his courtship with (and subsequent marriage to) arts student Jane Wilde (played by Felicity Jones), on whose memoir “Travelling to Infinity: My Life With Stephen” the script is based. Emily Watson co-stars as Hawking’s mother.
“The Homesman” (Nov. 21)
Based on a critically acclaimed novel by Glendon Swarthout, this period Western is co-produced, co-written and directed by Tommy Lee Jones, who also casts himself in the title role of a grizzled frontier drifter and “claims jumper.” Hilary Swank portrays the equally headstrong pioneer woman who enlists his aid in transporting a group of female mental patients on a treacherous covered-wagon trek from Nebraska to Iowa. The drama boasts a supporting ensemble that includes Meryl Streep, James Spader, John Lithgow and Hailee Steinfeld.
“The Imitation Game” (Dec. 25)
Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the real-life mathematician and cryptanalyst Alan Turing, who was renowned as a pioneer of modern-day computing and a decorated hero for his work as a British code breaker during World War II (he cracked the Nazis’ supposedly impenetrable Enigma machine). Shortly thereafter, however, when homosexuality was still considered a criminal offense, in 1952 he was charged, convicted and imprisoned for “gross indecency.” Keira Knightley co-stars as one of his friends and colleagues, under the direction of Norwegian Morten Tyldum (“Headhunters”).

Last Minute Cheap Flight Deals for Thanksgiving

Cheap Flight Tips for Thanksgiving
(Photo: sheindress.co.uk)
You may believe it’s too late to save on Thanksgiving flight plans, but you would be surprised at how many major airline companies offer great last minute seats to nearly anywhere on the planet. If you are looking to meet with family across the country, or get away on a vacation across the sea, you still have time to get great cheap airfare from many of the places you trust. If you live in the North of the United States, you may notice it is getting quite cold and you may wish to take a trip further South for a few days, just to hang onto that last bit of warmth before the winter sets in fully. Some of the best deals to look at come from the bigger airlines that can afford to give you seats for less, but we have some great tips for you to snag the best deal possible.
Many of the sites that tell you “we will find you the cheapest deal no matter what” can be tricky to get around if you have not planned a flight yet. Kayak says you should plan in early November, while Skyscanner says you should plan two weeks prior, and Orbitz says you should pick a weekday instead of Saturday or Sunday, in order to save even more money. It is common knowledge that the longer you wait, the more you will have to pay, but if you have not planned a trip yet, there is still some hope for you. Try picking a destination that not many people would plan on going to, and pick a flight during the day, while other people may be at work and not available to fly. Be sure to weigh the risks of unexpected fare, and watch out for “savings”. A lot of them only save you about five to ten percent, which is only fifteen to thirty dollars on a three hundred dollar ticket. It is not as much as it sounds.

Make sure you book as early as possible, and try not to have your return flight the Sunday after Thanksgiving. You avoid higher rates and spikes in pricing that way. Do not book in groups, as seats are dangerously hard to find with the more people you add, and be sure to check smaller airports near the “international” ones. Many are cheaper and can almost always make room for you. If you cannot avoid these things, then we suggest using a dependable airline and see exactly what your options are, making sure you get all of your prices worked out as soon as possible and getting packed today. How To Do The New Smoky Eyes Like Angelina Jolie And Jennifer Lawrence

Photo of Jennifer Lawrence and Angelina Jolie
(Photo:SheinDress prom dresses 2014)
Two of our favourite celebrities, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence both worked similar looks on seperate red carpets last night - and got us in the mood for a more dramatic take on evening make-up.
Natural make-up is a no-no for evenings out, now party season is almost in full swing, and our interest in a bold lip has peaked from over saturation. Plus, with news that sales of nude lipstick have overtaken red hues for the first time in three years, we think focus is firmly on the eyes for winter 2014.
Both Jennifer and Angelina updated the classic smoky look by using a gold shimmer to build the colour up to the brow bone, rather than heavy greys or blacks. Both starlets have also used liquid eyeliner to define the eye line, giving a stronger finish to their looks.
If you want to recreate this make-up style for a night out, follow these five simple tips to make sure you get it right, every time:
1. Use a medium-sized brush to sweep gold eyeshadow over the eyelid, stopping just above the crease. Blend right up to your lashes and out past the outer corner of the eye, to fall in line with the end of your eyebrow.
2. Trace alone the eyelashes with a soft black Kohl eyeliner - Charlotte Tilbury's Rock N Kohl is amazing for this - and gently smudge with your fingertip to soften the harsh line.
3. With a small and firm bristle brush, push a gunmetal eyeshadow into the lower lash line, blending to meet the outer corner of the eye.
4. Follow in Angelina and Jennifer's footsteps and line your lashes with a sweep of liquid eyeliner, to give a bold finish.
5. Apply lashings of mascara to open your eyes and soften the heavy eyeliner.

If you make any mistakes, just dip a cotton bud in concealer and brush it over your skin. Any stray eyeshadow or eyeliner will be picked up on the concealer.Read more at:SheinDress graduation dresses

Karlie Kloss Get Fitted for Her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Wings

Karlie Kloss Get Fitted for Her Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Wings
Plans are well underway for this year’s #VSFashionShow, airing on Dec. 9 on CBS, and the costumes are getting their finishing touches as we speak.
Lucky for us, Victoria’s Secret Angel Karlie Kloss gave InStyle an invite to her private fitting at the VS studios, where famed wing designer Serkan Cura was hard at work finalizing all of the intricate details of her look for the sexiest runway show of the year.
“I was inspired by dragon flies,” the designer tells InStyle of the corset and wings, which were perfectly fitted to Kloss’s body. “Many of the great couture collections have used butterflies, but I saw an image of a dragonfly and decided to interpret their wings.”
And we were there to capture every moment from the fitting. Watch the GIF above to get the first look at one of the outfits she’ll be wearing on the show, then read on to find out how Kloss gets into primo shape for the show, and the first thing she eats post-corset:
Tell us what it feels like having this incredible outfit on designed especially for you!
It’s amazing. The attention to detail is exquisite. It’s pretty amazing because we’re still a month out from the show and everybody’s in overdrive sort of pulling this together because it’s like a couture show but in front of millions of people.
Photo: prom dresses
No pressure.
No pressure! [laughs] But it’s pretty amazing. This one I love. It actually is part of the dream girls section, and I think I’m closing the section so it’s always a bit of an extra honor, a bit of an extra sort of special thing to sort of open or close a section. And the music is also going to be really good in this section. It’s a secret, shhh!
What its like 24 hours leading up to the show?
The energy is pretty unreal. It’s this day that you’ve been preparing for all year; millions of dollars of preparations, hundreds of people all year preparing for this one day, and you really just want to do what you can to not mess it up and to do your best! The night before we have a dress rehearsal and the day of, it’s all day, hair and makeup and interviews. By the time the show actually rolls around I’m kind of exhausted and it hasn’t even started. It’s a really special day when it finally all comes together in that moment when the show actually happens.
What’s the first thing you do after the show ends?
We go devour pizza at the after party. That’s what I do, anyways! Because I push myself to sort of just try and feel as strong and as confident as I can out on the runway, so I generally am working out even more than usual and my appetite is even more than usual.
How do you get into shape for the show?
I do a bit of everything. I like to do pilates, and strength training with ankle weights or with bands, but I also like to sort of do the Soul Cycle or cardio just even a run, anything I can do just to kind of keep it moving. Especially I travel so much, even between now and the show time I’ll be traveling a bit for other work so it’s important to sort of take care of myself and make sure I feel good when I hit that runway.
Any workouts you don’t like?

I’m pretty adventurous and open-minded when it comes to things. When I first started spinning I detested it. I couldn’t breathe, I was frustrated because the old lady next to me was like doing better than me. But it actually made me want to like keep going and get better. So there’s nothing I don’t’ really like except a long run. A long run is not my friend!

Losing weight requires a little help from friends

Two women running together
(Photo:prom dresses)
But it turns out that being accountable to someone else is not only important; it’s crucial to losing weight.
Researchers at the University of Illinois in the States have found that receiving social support may be vital in motivating women to lose weight and keep it off. For some women, it was the critical factor in their success.
The study looked at not just the ability to achieve diet goals, but the participants' abilities to keep the weight off. The women who maintained their weight loss had a high levels of social support.
Catherine Metzgar, a research assistant in food science and human nutrition and one of the paper's authors, told Health Canal, "Our women didn't find that accountability to themselves was so important, but having support from others was – just having that social support from someone who was going through the same experience.
"What this study shows is that if you can find that one friend who has the same goals or can just hold you accountable, it is really helpful."
Women who succeeded at keeping the weight off did the following things: they exercised regularly; they "listened to an inner voice" that reminded them to control their portion sizes; and they also took a "fresh-slate mentality" where they would return to eating well after a "slip up" or "bad day" rather than letting one lapse trigger a downward spiral, according to Health Canal.

The study also looked at the power of life transitions in women's weight fluctuations. Events like graduation, starting a sedentary job, getting married, pregnancy and childbirth, were all pitfalls for many of the women, triggering "continual bouts of weight gain, weight loss, maintenance and prevention of weight regain," the study says. Also read here:celebrity style dresses

3 tips to a healthier you

Scheduling time for yourself is just as important as everything else you do each day.
(Image:SheinDress backless prom dresses)
Do you have a healthy relationship with yourself? We value maintaining our bonds with others far more than nurturing our own health and well-being. This became apparent to me after a long work day a few years back. I was driving home – one hand being used to ravenously stuff a Styrofoam packaged dinner down my throat, the other to give unladylike gestures to passing drivers. I lazily parked my car half on the curb, half on my neighbor’s cat, and was so consumed by the stresses of my day that it wasn’t until the next morning that I realized I forgot to close the garage door behind me. Thanks ADT Security; you came to the rescue again.
I had spent the majority of my day promoting living a healthy life through exercise and eating well, meanwhile the majority of my day was the complete antithesis of that. Sound familiar? If you have been coasting through life on bald tires, with the engine light on, it is time to put yourself in the driver’s seat and take control of your self-worth and esteem. How though? It’s easier than you think. Check out these three simple adjustments that will promote a healthier, saner you:
Exercise. Set aside one hour each day to focus on your physical health. You live in your body, and you have the choice to reside in a mansion, or a dilapidated shack with an overgrown lawn and garden gnomes you refer to as “family.”
Everyone has one hour to dedicate toward their health. Find a time that has no distractions or obligations, and write down in your agenda book that you have a date with yourself. It’s time to give you the same priority allotted to a friend, family member or boss. Exercise tends to be a chore; therefore most people pass on adding another “to-do” item to their already extensive list. Trick your brain out of boredom by promoting exercises that don’t seem like exercise at all.
Walk your dog for an hour – he will love you for it, and canines make for great partners in that they listen and don’t respond. Or sign up for recreational sports – they are called recreational for a reason. Not to mention, throwing a dodge ball at someone’s head makes for a great stress reliever. Playing ball with your child is also a great opportunity to bond and exercise.
Meditate. Whether you want to get all sexy about it by turning down the lights, firing up a few scented candles and letting loose to the latest Enya CD, or you want to simply sit in a quiet room, meditation is one of the best ways to promote mental health. Feeling good is only achieved when there is a balance between mental and physical health.
My favorite exercise for achieving mental calmness is venturing out for a long walk before or after work. Take the time to practice your breathing technique. For every few steps inhale, and have an equal amount of steps on held breath and on the exhale. Visualize something peaceful, whether it is sitting on a hammock by the lake, or watching the ocean tide roll in and out from the shore line. Focus your attention on being in the moment, and don’t be frustrated if your brain begins to wander. Simply refocus and begin again.
Eat Well. Just as the mind and body work together to achieve a balanced state, so does nutrition and the body. Exercise alone will not achieve a healthy physique if you are littering your body with junk, alcohol or over-indulging/skipping meals. When you are feeling stressed, it is easy to turn to food for comfort. Unfortunately, it only tastes good momentarily, and takes much longer to burn off.

Eating our emotions becomes a vicious cycle. As a certain larger-than-life villain from Austin Powers stated so perfectly, “I eat because I am unhappy, and I am unhappy because I eat.” Break this sick cycle. Stock your refrigerator with healthy options that will fill and satisfy. Your plate should be filled with many colors, like a rainbow – not a Skittle’s bag. Also read here:plus size prom dresses

3 Month Preparation for Brides-to-be

3 Month Preparation for Brides-to-be
(Photo:SheinDress graduation dresses)
For brides-to-be, it takes several weeks of planning to look stellar on the big day. Here is a guide to which beauty preparations to plan and when.
Three months before the wedding: Hair
What type of hairstyle will you wear down the aisle? Though you don't have to lock into a specific style three months out, this is the time to decide if you want to grow your hair long for an elaborate up-do. Likewise, if you plan to go with a shorter style, now is the time to try it on for size. For those with brittle or damaged hair, there is still time to start taking vitamins to ensure healthy and lustrous locks on the big day.
One month before: Skin
According to Chanel makeup artist Claire Blavet, a deep facial cleanse can sometimes bring out impurities and cause temporary blemishes. So this step should be carried out around 30 days before the wedding, allowing the skin time to heal. More importantly, during these final weeks, take especially good care of your skin. This means washing your face once or twice a day with a gentle cleanser and an exfoliating cloth for a smooth, clear complexion, always following with a moisturizer adapted to your skin type. Brides-to-be may also consider buying a thermal water spray, which can be applied to the face to keep the skin fresh and hydrated at all times.
One week before: Waxing and hands
Since you will have to raise your arms to throw the bouquet, and since you'll want to flash your legs on the dance floor, book your waxing appointment one week before walking down the aisle. Why so early? This gives the skin time to heal from any irritation or red spots.
Also, since your hands will be in the spotlight on the big day, it is important to make sure they are as soft and smooth as possible. If you don't have time to book a hand treatment at a spa, at least make sure to apply hand moisturizer regularly, at least once a day.
One day before: Nails and skin
Now that your hands are fully moisturized, it's time to think about your nails. All eyes will be on your hands during the exchange of the rings, so it's best to avoid chipped nail polish by waiting until the last minute to get your manicure.

This is also a crucial moment when it comes to the skin. Claire Blavet advises against using heavy, oily moisturizers near the eye area the day before the wedding, as this may cause puffiness. For the lips, however, don't hesitate to apply a thick, ultra-moisturizing balm to ensure your pout is healthy and plump when you wake up in the morning. And of course, hydrate the rest of your face liberally with your favorite lightweight moisturizer. Also read here:black prom dresses london

5 ways to make fish healthier

Salmon_Asparagus.jpg
(Image:sheindress.co.uk vintage prom dresses)
Eating fish has been tied with lower rates of heart disease, stroke, depression, and Alzheimer’s disease. But how it you eat may be the real key to reaping its benefits. Recent research from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine concluded that study volunteers who regularly ate fish had larger brain volumes in regions associated with memory and cognition, but only if the fish baked or broiled, not fried.
Baking and broiling are also better for your waistline. For example, a dozen fried shrimp can pack 280 calories, versus a mere 85 calories for 12 shrimp that have been steamed or broiled. To make up the difference you’d have to spend about 25 minutes on the elliptical. So if fish and chips is your usual go-to, try lightening it up.
Here are five tips for making baked and broiled seafood taste fantastic.
Use good fat
Before cooking, brush fish filets with extra virgin olive or coconut oil, or slather with a jarred sauce, such as sundried tomato, roasted red pepper, or basil pesto. Or after cooking, top with sliced or chopped avocado, finely chopped nuts, or a dollop of olive tapenade or drizzle of tahini.
Add herbs and spices
There are numerous ways to season seafood, from a simple combo of garlic and Italian herbs to a fiery layer of blackened seasonings. Some of my favorite combinations include: fresh squeezed lime juice, lime zest, cilantro, and black pepper; minced garlic, fresh grated ginger, ground turmeric, and crushed red pepper; fresh squeezed lemon juice, lemon peel, minced garlic, parsley, and black pepper; fresh dill, minced garlic, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Layer it
After baking or broiling, stack fish with layers of other delicious healthy foods, such as hummus, sautéed spinach, roasted tomatoes, seasoned lentils, sauteed mushrooms, wild rice, mashed sweet potato, spaghetti squash, mango salsa, or slaw.
Chill it
In addition to chilled shrimp cocktail, nearly any fish can be served cold after it’s cooked. Top an entrée salad with chilled fish; add it to a cold salad made with veggies and either whole grain pasta, wild rice, or quinoa; add it to a classic chilled veggie dish like a marinated cucumber salad; or spoon it into lettuce boats made from outer romaine leaves.
Add it to other dishes

After simply baking or boiling, add seafood to another flavorful dish, such as a soup, stew, stir fry or veggie “pasta” dish. Or spoon it into corn tortillas and top with pico de gallo and guacamole for a healthy version of healthy fish tacos. Also read here:sheindress.co.uk black prom dresses

The False Promise of Celebrity Fashion Lines

compositephoto123-2
(Photo:mermaid prom dresses belfast)
Perhaps you heard that an up and coming musician named Beyoncé is going to create an athletic line with Topshop. (It’s a partnership, not a collaboration so don’t get it twisted.) That means that the gravitational force that brings superfans as well as people who aren’t even creaming their jeggings for Beyoncé to the Barclays Center will also line up at Topshop for these clothes.
When I heard the news, it was exciting. I love her aesthetic and she dresses for a different kind of body than your typical style maven. (Only in fashion, does a woman with discernable hips count as groundbreaking size diversity.) It’s exciting, but it’s truly strange how we heap such huge expectations onto a partnership like this as though a pair of parachute pants are a piece of her. Part of the problem is that people see these clothes as way to capture her aesthetic. Deservedly, everything she touches turns to gold. But whether you call it collaborating, curating, or designing, this deal operates under the assumption that everything a famous person touches turns to quality.
Take for example Cara Delevingne’s recent DKNY designs. It’s a solid capsule collection, but I take issue with the yellow beanie. I actually feel allergic to it. Obviously a Cara-branded beanie doesn’t negate all the signs that the woman wearing it is a unique snowflake. I know the public isn’t gullible enough to think that by spending $70 on a very special sock hat will instantly help you know how it feels to have someone create a portrait of you with breadcrumbs. But wearing it is a sign of both thoughtlessness and a surplus of money. Its wearer’s sin isn’t being unoriginal. It’s overpaying. Even if the provocateur gave beanie input, it’s mostly skilled Rumpelstiltskins spinning up the most palatable staples.
There’s no denying that the person wearing that vintage backward DKNY hat you see everywhere might simply be the person who has more time to shop for vintage than the one in the Cara hat. But there’s something to be said for finding something that truly feels right. These things look good on her because they are what feels right to her. The fact that we justify a $70 beanie with her name on it means that our capacity, as consumers, for romanticizing famous people beats that of the average nine-year-old fanboy or fangirl. Telling women they’re followers for liking a hat is not what I’m saying. But I feel that it would brand me as the equivalent of a maniacal groupie who loses her shit over the sign of her favorite boy band.
Miley Cyrus’s candi jewelry for Jeremy Scott is really just fodder, mostly because it was either rave or bong-themed. But when designers like Karl Lagerfeld embrace Pharrell as the genius of the year, or when Kanye West insists the fashion world owes him opportunities even when his designs are torn apart, I feel like we’re just being spoon-fed every fashion fanboy or fangirl’s ego-yanking project. Other than being famous, there’s not really anything to warrant Pharrell’s involvement in anything I wear. I know. I know. So stop whining and just talk about stuff you like right? Actually, Pharrell’s death grip on macarons, trains and everything in the world is unavoidable on the internet.
Before I had a sense of who I was (and I’m still an awkward dork who tries desperately to cover up a New York accent,) I tirelessly tried to convince myself I was Claudia Cardinale with peasant tops. What can I say. This was my childhood dream, (not the one where the kid from The Wonder Years orders me a pizza.) Having a license that said I was from Queens wasn’t even a drawback. But now I know better, and I see her as more of a muse.
When I discover an aesthetic I love, I’m more impressionable than the average cult follower. But that doesn’t stop me from despising the “Get Her Look,” editorials I only read in nail salons. They encourage readers to buy things that look exactly like what famous people wear, so that you’ll emerge from the store a fully blown doppelganger. I prefer to think of the famous and the stylish as my inspiration, because everyone needs inspiration. Even your most original friend in those wide-leg jeans which mysteriously fell into her lap from a gypsy hot air balloon. Even she has people she follows.
It has to be about you actually shaking out what it is about an inspirational aesthetic that grabs you, and wearing the stuff that makes you feel good. Buying the unmistakably Rita Ora adidas rose jumpsuit, which Beyoncé has already worn, doesn’t erase your character, but it’s overdone already. Beyoncé’s Topshop collection might be stunning, but in the meantime, finding something that simply echoes that floral pattern is a much is the better move.

Celebrity-driven collections are nothing new. It’s about putting everything cool in a batter and create more content to consume. Victoria Beckham and L.A.M.B. have had lasting commercial success because of the distinctive aesthetics behind their poster girls. They feel authentic. You can count me among the fangirls of The Row and Elizabeth and James. But not everyone can be the Olsens, who seem to intuitively understand how to flatter women with contemporary things. The silhouettes are impeccable. I didn’t buy an Elizabeth and James romper because I don’t want to live in a world without that video of them going apeshit over pizza. I did it because the clothes are good. Also read here:SheinDress prom dresses uk

Family and friends packed into the historical Quaker Meeting House Saturday afternoon for a somewhat nontraditional wedding ceremony.
Megan Donley, owner of Lotus Moon Yoga and Creative Healing Arts Center in downtown York, and Jeff Hewitt, a maintenance and set-up employee at the York County Heritage Trust, combined both historic and new-age elements into their ceremony and reception.
Megan Donley's father, Tom, a former president of the county Chamber of Commerce, said the meeting house was the perfect choice for the couple.
"Megan grew up in the Presbyterian church," Tom Donley said after the roughly 30-minute ceremony. "She's taken the concept of love from different religions. The meeting house is a unique, historical place in York. It represents tolerance in faith."
But the location of the ceremony also provided a unique glimpse into York for out-of-town family members, some of whom came all the way from California, Washington and Puerto Rico.
Ben Stephens, who lives and works in Seattle, arrived in York Friday night and has been staying in downtown for the weekend. Stephens, who was born in Korea and moved to the United States when he was three months old, has been to Pennsylvania before. He would spend some summers at the Donley's home in the Poconos.
Stephens said he "attempted" yoga Saturday morning at Megan's studio, and then got lunch at Central Market with his family.
"York has a nice, small hometown feel," Stephens said. "I like the small boutique shops."
Others who came from outside York got a chance to stroll through city streets after the ceremony as the wedding crowd meandered to the Agriculture and Industrial Museum on West Princes Street. Once inside, guests could walk with their beers and learn about York's history.
"I'm a history buff," said Andrew Kennedy (a cousin of the bride), as he walked slowly among historical industrial equipment including old hydraulic pumps and Conestoga wagons.
Kennedy, 39, works in finance in New York City and drove four hours for the wedding.
"This doesn't happen where I'm from. You wouldn't get to have a wedding at the Met," he said, referring to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan.
The Rev. Diane Finlayson, an interfaith minister from the Baltimore area, officiated the wedding ceremony.
Sunlight poured in through the windows of the 18th century-era building, which sits on East Philadelphia Street on the outer edge of York.
The meeting house has two smaller rooms split in the middle with a waist-high partition. Megan and Jeff Hewitt stood in the center of one room with about 150 people seated around them, mostly on old wooden benches.
Toward the end of the ceremony, Finlayson had the room speak in unison, stating that the married couple was united as one.
Guest Teresa Vitz, of Red Lion, said the wedding was unique.
"It called upon all sensibilities," she said at the reception. "Jeff has always been a spiritual, earthy person. I think for the two, (the ceremony) matches their personalities."
Megan Donley's friend and yoga mentor, John Protopapas, was also in attendance Saturday.
"It's been wonderful to see Megan flower into the woman she is," Protopapas, 57, said. "Watching these two souls grow together has been wonderful to see."

The historical elements of the day were just an added bonus. Also read here:yellow prom dresses london

Fashion takes on artistic slant

(Photo:white prom dresses london)
Every autumn for the past seven years, Wilmington’s “Style Girl” Jess James has organized a runway show previewing the trends of the upcoming fall fashion season.
This year, however, James is trying a new approach in presenting the apparel she feels will be hip and relevant through 2014 and into 2015. James is theming her “Seventh Annual Fall Fashion Preview” around selected artworks featured in the Cameron Art Museum’s “State of the Art, Art of the State” exhibition.
“I think a lot of people agree that fashion is an art itself,” James said. “There is just a natural synergy between the two.”
The event kicks off 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cameron Art Museum. As the models strut the runway, the CAM will project photographs by Ben Minor of the models posing alongside the artwork that inspired their ensemble. Attending fashionistas will also have the opportunity to see the artworks up close in “State of the Art/Art of the State,” an extensive collection of North Carolina art featuring 678 works in just about every style and medium by 678 North Carolina artists.
The show’s diversity gave James and her colleagues plenty to work with while scoping out connections between “State of the Art/Art of the State” and the world of fashion.
“We just started on one wall and worked our way around,” James said. “We were here for quite a while.”
Representational artworks translate easily into a fashion show. Raleigh artist Ann Marie Kennedy’s handmade abaca paper work “Shelter” features pressed flowers surrounding an embossed impression of a dress that almost looks Victorian. James plans on complementing “Shelter” with a model in similar garb, with Beauty Bar Boutique adorning the model’s hair with pressed flowers.

Other connections are more abstract: outfits inspired by textures, color schemes and the overall mood of an artwork. When James saw Raleigh artist Leatha Koefler’s “Comfort Quilt; My Life on Slides,” she thought, “Oh, we have to use this.” The piece is a patterned collage of sorts that makes use of thread, colorful buttons and slide film positives. James paired it with a dress that uses a similar pattern and colors, with the word “peace” patterned on the fabric. Also read here:sheindress.co.uk yellow prom dresses

Can You Change Your Skin’s Destiny?

Can You Change Your Skin’s Destiny?
(Photo:vintage prom dresses uk)
The 8-month-long study saw researchers measuring and analysing the ‘skin age’ and conditions of 141 long-term Facial Treatment Essence users and 131 Non Facial Treatment users.
272 women spanning the ages of 28 to 76 put their skin and beauty regimens to the ultimate test in SK-II’s Skin Destiny Study to reveal the secret to lasting radiant, glowing, youthful skin and the results are in.
THE SECRET WEAPON TO CHANGE SKIN’S DESTINY?
SK-II researchers have discovered an intrinsic link between long-term usage of SK-II Facial Treatment Essence and better skin quality as we age. In fact, long-term users of the Essence who started in their 20s enjoy better skin in their 30s and 40s.
More impressively, 9 in 10 loyal users have better skin compared to non-users in the same age group, with 7 in 10 users having better skin conditions as compared to non-users who are 10 years younger.
INVESTING IN YOUR SKINS FUTURE
The beauty of SK-II Facial Treatment Essence is that it is so easy to incorporate into your existing skincare routine. You just apply after cleansing and before your serum or moisturiser and the delicate composition of vitamins, amino acids, minerals and organic acids work to bring your skin to its natural best.
SK-II Beauty Expert, Eleanor Pendleton, explains why she started using SK-II Facial Treatment Essence 8 years ago and why she can’t put it down:
“I was introduced to SK-II when I was 18-years-old by my mum. She had been a long-time user of the brand. Since then – and despite being a beauty editor who is privy to thousands of different skincare products – SK-II Facial Treatment Essence has become a main stay in my personal skincare routine.

After using SK-II Facial Treatment Essence for a few days, I noticed any redness or inflammation in my skin had subsided. After a couple of weeks, my blemishes had cleared and I began to feel confident about my skin again. And, within a month, my complexion was glowing. I use it every morning and night – it’s my go-to for beautiful skin.”Also read here:sheindress.co.uk backless prom dresses

Eat a Better Breakfast Every Day and Here's Why

holiday-brunch-breakfast-ftr
(Image:bridesmaid dresses)
When I was young, my Dad used to fix breakfast when he wasn’t traveling. I remember once he made my brother and I a jelly omelet. Huh? Jelly on eggs? He occasionally served up the odd morning entrée and I dutifully ate it. In fact, our family ate breakfast every day. I also remember losing 10 pounds while at Wake Forest University and when my friends asked “How’d you do that?” I told them: a protein breakfast like egg, sausage, cottage cheese, or cheese. It seemed to kick-start my metabolism for the day.
This brings us to a small study that finds “breakfast led to reductions in food cravings in…an index of central dopamine production, with the high protein breakfast eliciting greater responses.” Dopamine is a neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure and reward—we want more, more, more of both!
Translation: A protein-rich breakfast could help reduce food cravings and modulate the feelings that control “food reward” in overweight or obese young people. True, I write here about mature adults, but “perhaps” the takeaway can be applied to all of us? Our bodies secrete dopamine when we eat foods we love, hence we feel a “food reward.” We feel oh-so-good. Skip breakfast, and we’re going to have cravings all day, the authors said.
That was for the Body, and now for the Mind. Here’s yet another reason you should embrace physical activity—so many reasons! New researchreports that physical activity three times weekly “may alleviate depressive symptoms in the general population and, in turn, depressive symptoms in early adulthood may be a barrier to activity.”
Depressed individuals—in this study, young adults—were less likely to engage in physical activity. Study participants self-reported physical activity and depression symptoms at ages 23, 33, 42 and 50. Again, we cannot apply the findings of this study specifically to everyone, but it’s not the first research connecting exercise and less depression. And certainly, if you’re depressed and can just make yourself get off the couch and get moving, you’re going to feel better.

Finally, if someone tells you “you’re neurotic,” you might brush it off with a huff. A new study finds an association between neuroticism—being anxious, worried and stressed—in midlife women and a higher incidence of Alzheimer’s disease later in life. Reducing stress continues to be a consistent theme in health. The challenge is how to reduce it when it’s “in your face.” Exercise, meditation, especially mindfulness, and even petting your dog or cat are good temporary fixes. No doubt science will pursue more solutions now and in the near future, since stress when it’s severe or long-term, has dire consequences. Also read here:formal dresses belfast

Ten healthy fall fruits and vegetables

(Image:prom dresses uk)
The following is from missourifamilies.org. MissouriFamilies is provided by University of Missouri Extension.
Melissa Bess, Nutrition and Health Education Specialist, Camden County, offers these ten healthy fall fruits and vegetables:
1. Sweet potatoes. They are loaded with beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B6. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert.
2. Apples. Apples are a traditional fall favorite. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber.
3. Broccoli. This is one vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease, and boost the immune system.
4. Pumpkin. Pumpkin is a great source of potassium and beta carotene. Canned or prepared fresh, pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts.
5. Kiwi. This fruit can be eaten alone (after peeling) or can be added to many different dishes, including soups, salads and desserts. Kiwi contains antioxidants, and has vitamin C, fiber, potassium, magnesium and vitamin E.
6. Avocado. Avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fat. Even healthy fat is a dense source of energy, so it’s important to eat avocados in moderation. They also contain vitamin E, fiber, potassium, folate and vitamin C. Avocados can be used on sandwiches or salads, or made into guacamole.
7. Green beans. Green beans are high in vitamin K which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium, folate, iron and magnesium. Green beans can be served as a side dish or used in salads, soups or casseroles.
8. Spinach. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anti-cancer agents. Try using it on pizza or lasagna or use it instead of lettuce in a salad.
9. Pears. They are a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may guard against macular degeneration.

10. Winter squash. It contains fiber, potassium, iron and vitamin A. Vitamin A helps ensure healthy skin, hair, vision and bones. Winter squash can be mashed, used in breads, desserts and soups, or as a snack or side dish.Read more here:black evening dresses uk

4 Ways to Get Healthier Right Now!

school-lunch-hummus-wraps_maren-caruso-ftr
(Image:homepage prom dresses online shop)
For a lot of people, the idea of getting healthier sounds a lot better than the actual act of doing it! Quite a few excuses start cropping up like; I’m too busy, I’ll start tomorrow, or Monday, or the 1st of the month, or January 1st. However, the easiest excuse is that it’s too hard and takes too long. Quick results are all over the TV, why can’t I have those? So for all of you out there that just can’t seem to get started, I want to give you four simple, quick ways to become a healthier person. Four things that you can do right now, today, this morning.
1. Your Pantry: I really hope that you spend a considerable amount of fun and interesting times in the place you call home. As such, it should be the safe haven of your health! Stocking healthy, appetizing and simple foods is the cornerstone to eating at home. If you don’t have chips, candy or cookies in your house…you won’t eat it. You are totally allowed to force yourself into a better diet! You have to make it fun and delicious though, I am totally against boring and tasteless. Go empty that snack shelf right now.
2. Eat at Home: What’s the use of having all those wonderful choices in your cabinet if you just go out and destroy all your hard work in the gym by eating every night a restaurant? When you make dinner, you control the ingredients. When you own a restaurant, you control what’s printed on a menu. Reading a menu does not tell you how much salt they used, what kind and how much butter, the labeling on the sauces showing fat and sodium content and no one is going to tell you the massive amounts of sugar dumped into your dessert. Do this: Find a wonderful dish and recreate it at home tonight using modifications that make it a healthy alternative. Once done and enjoyed, brag about it :). Go clear off that dinner table right now.
3. Pack Your Lunch: Ever get tired of work and get really excited about lunch time so you can get out of the office, house or car? Yes, you should get out and enjoy lunch, just don’t do it at a restaurant all the time! I will never tell anyone to skip lunch for calorie reasons but skipping the sub shop is a great idea. Again, you need to control the food that goes into your body. Veggies and yogurt dip beat french fries, nuts beat coleslaw and spring roll wraps beat a turkey sub. Your body deserves to be treated well even when your colleagues refuse to do so. The bread during a lunch trip out can add up to 600mg of sodium not counting anything you put on it! Calories are another beast all together, you can hit a days worth, literally in half your lunch hour. There are all kinds of really neat lunch boxes out there, go buy one right now.

4. Get Up and Move: The gym is 3 miles away, the park is around the block, the treadmill is folded up under the bed. Don’t go to the gym right now, don’t bring your dog to the park this instant, leave that outdated treadmill alone to the dust. Get up and move. It’s not about doing the best workout you’ve ever done, It’s about the total activity level during your whole day! Stay active, do your chores, make your bed, fix the railing, pump up the tires of your bike, chop some veggies for tomorrow, PACK YOUR LUNCH, throw the ball with the dog, teach your kid how to properly fight with a light saber, teach your spouse how to properly dance. Please, please, please…right now…stop reading this and go move.Read more here:evening dresses london

5 Habits of Models With Gorgeous Skin

5 Habits of Models With Gorgeous Skin
(Photo:prom dresses 2014)
Contrary to popular belief, not all models are born with glowing skin. They deal with complexion quirks like anyone else—and they’re often made ten times worse thanks to the amount of makeup they have to wear on the job. Although models are genetically gifted, they’re not immune to acne, puffy eyes, dry skin, and a host of other problems.
But here’s the difference: For models, having anything but a glowing complexion is simply not an option. “Taking care of their skin is not about being vain or wanting to feel good—it’s an investment in their career,” says Samantha Wright, an esthetician at Dangene, a skin clinic in New York that counts A-list models and actresses among their clients.
Understandably, models approach skin care a little differently than many of us—their jobs depend on it. Here’s what these professional beauties do to keep their skin in peak condition.
They make a plan—and stick with it.
Fashion Week happens in the spring and fall, but models prep all year ‘round. “I recommend people prepare months in advance before any large event,” says Dr. Jennifer MacGregor, a dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. “I usually start people six months out, but three months is okay.” Along with a topical skin-care regimen, she may recommend lasers (such as Fraxel or Permea) to address more challenging issues, such as hyperpigmentation.
They think of ALL of their skin.
Models never know when they’ll need to wear a plunging neckline or backless dress on the runway. That’s why their skin care doesn’t end with their face. “We can focus on the body, smoothing out the chest and the back—even the stomach,” Wright says. An appointment at Dangene starts with a head-to-toe evaluation, followed by customized treatments that could include mole removal, microdermabrasion, or a collagen-boosting LED session. “We might do an acid wash to get rid of all the dead skin cells,” Wright explains, “so when a model walks down the runway, she glistens, shines, and is flawless.”
They build a relationship with their dermatologist.
Dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf often answers questions via email or text, teaching her model clients how to treat mini-emergencies at home. Make sure your powder room is stalked with the lotions and potions you need to treat a blemish, calm your skin, or get an immediate glow.
They know what to do when zit happens.
If models break out before a big shoot, they have a couple of treatment options. “If it’s a deep cyst, they can come in for an emergency cortisone injection,” says Dr. MacGregor. By reducing inflammation, these shots reduce the size and redness of even the biggest blemish. For smaller breakouts, Dr. MacGregor recommends Neutrogena On-the-Spot acne treatment. “It’s a more mild benzoyl peroxide that won’t cause as much irritation,” she explains. (For more on battling blemishes, read this.)
They make their facials count.

"Even models get stressed out," says celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas. “They’re running around and not eating well.” When this happens, Vargas gives models a Power Peel treatment. First, a mild fruit acid and paprika peel gently resurfaces the skin. Then, models sit under a healing LED light before oxygen is sprayed to brighten the complexion and destroy bacteria. “They look perfect without us having to do a lot of intervention,” Vargas says. And for a model, that’s just a perk of the job. Also read here:www.sheindress.co.uk/mermaid-trumpet-prom-dresses
