Junk food makes rats lose interest in varied foods

(Image:prom dresses 2014)
Researchers in Australia say a steady intake of junk food leads to a loss of rats' natural appetite for a balanced diet, indicating that poor eating habits could lead to changes in the brain.
"The interesting thing about this finding is that if the same thing happens in humans, eating junk food may change our responses to signals associated with food rewards," says University of New South Wales professor Margaret Morris. "It's like you've just had ice cream for lunch, yet you still go and eat more when you hear the ice cream van come by."
In a study that illustrates how over-indulgence deteriorates self-control and ultimately leads to poor health, researchers conducted a Pavlovian-style experiment on rats.
Working with young male rats, they taught them to associate one of two different sound cues with either cherry- or grape-flavored sugar water, respectively.
Rats maintaining a healthy diet stopped responding to the sound cue after having over-indulged in the flavor with which it was associated, reflecting a mechanism that occurs naturally in most animals to promote proper eating habits.
Next, the rats were allowed to access pie, dumplings, cookies and cake for two weeks, adding an estimated 150 percent more calories to their diet.
A ten percent weight gain and behavior change followed, marked by a lack of interest in novelty foods and continuous response to the sound cue despite over-indulgence in the flavor it was advertising.
Remarking that it took the rats a long time to regain their natural responses after returning to a healthy diet, researchers believe junk food's powerful impact on decision-making could result in long-term changes to the reward circuit area of the brain.
Because human brain chemistry is similarly wired to that of rats, researchers say their study provides increased evidence of advertising's contributions to the obesity crisis.

"As the global obesity epidemic intensifies, advertisements may have a greater effect on people who are overweight and make snacks like chocolate bars harder to resist," says Dr. Amy Reichelt, lead author of the paper and UNSW postdoctoral associate.Read more here:www.sheindress.co.uk/pink-prom-dresses

New Zealand Fashion Week Live: Day Two

(Image:bridesmaid dresses uk)
Some heavy hitters are expected down the catwalk this evening - Andrea Moore, Juliette Hogan and Zambesi among them. We'll bring you the details on those as they happen.
Here's what today's looked like so far ...
* Huffer's new dressy womenswear label, Aim, was launched to the soulful strains of Watercolours, aka Chelsea Jade Metcalf, at the Huffer Basement just off Queen Street. Metcalf waltzed down from the stage and along the floor, creating her own runway and frightening nearby bloggers. "She's spooky," one said. There was no actual catwalk show - just lookbooks to take away.
Dished out: coffee, Veuve Clicquot, mini-cereal and yoghurt pots and bagels.
* There was a show by two Lucys ... A houndstooth print in the shape of a swan? Pretty clever, from Napier's Lucy Kemp. Her outfits had a beatnik feel earlier this morning - though we wish there hadn't been quite so much heavy eye makeup. Also in the same show, Lucy Mcintosh's collection which is totally wearable - cute jumpsuits, gold-zippered leggings and structured jackets.
Dished out: a single rose.
* Last night, Stolen Girlfriends sent models down a racetrack at Western Springs Stadium, the gritty aesthetic of the runway suiting their grungy outfits perfectly. Slicked-back hair, glittery embellishments on double denim (on a jumpsuit, we loved it) leather jackets, mesh, tartan, and yellow were all spotted.

* This afternoon the runway's been taken over by ivory at the Weddings fashion showcase.Read more here:sexy prom dresses

5 ways to have happy feet

Lindsay Martin, from Hilton Head Health, demonstrates muscle therapy using a small hard rubber ball that's rolled on feet.

Anyone who has taken a yoga class knows that the practice is done in bare feet. No shoes, no socks, just feet. I am asked about this quite often. Besides the obvious, such as not tracking in outside dirt and keeping our mats and practice space clean, there are other vital reasons for taking off those shoes.
These days, I’ve noticed a lot of commercials for foot products like inserts and specialized shoes. We enclose our feet inside an artificial structure designed to, we’re told, make the foot work better or reduce injuries, pain and strain.
Sometimes our feet are encased in shoes for the better part of our day — anywhere from eight to 18 hours — when what we really need is to take those shoes off and let our feet do the job for which they were built.
Because they’re not the most attractive part of our body, we tend to overlook the feet or misalign their structure by jamming them into narrow-toed shoes or 4-inch heels.
The engineering marvel known as the human foot is made up of 26 bones (including the ankle), 33 joints and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments. Without the foot, we couldn’t stand, and without the big toe, balance would be nearly impossible.
Consider the fact that feet are our shock absorbers and propel us through our world. The incredible mechanics of the foot distribute our weight from heel to toe as we walk or run, and those toes defy gravity, pushing away the ground beneath us to move us onto the next step. In yoga practice, the toes may grip the mat to keep you sturdy or spread out to keep you balanced.
Here are a few simple things you can do to strengthen muscles, loosen tight ligaments and tendons and encourage the foot through its range of motion.
These exercises may lead you to look at your feet with a new awareness and appreciation, all the while reducing strains that lead to injury or issue.
• Sit on a chair and press the base of the toes into the floor, heels lifted. Hold for five to 10 breaths. Then, curl the toes under so you’re on the knuckles, leaning forward just enough to feel the pressure. Hold for five to 10 breaths. Repeat pressing the base of the toes into the floor.
• Sit on a chair or the floor with your right foot perched above your knee. Using the hands, hold each side of your foot and rotate the sole toward the ceiling. Hold for five to 10 breaths. Repeat with the other foot.
• Position your fingers between each toe and press downward and away from the center of the foot. Hold for five to 10 breaths.
• Align the foot’s energetic qualities by pressing a thumb into the center of the arch. Hold for five to 10 breaths.

• Place a “dead” tennis ball or rolled towel under the arch of your foot and begin rolling the ball or towel back and forth from heel to toe. Continue for 30 to 60 seconds. Repeat with other foot. Also read here:www.sheindress.co.uk/blue-prom-dresses

Top 5 reasons you should be eating bok choy

Bok choy or pak choi is a Chinese leafy cabbage
(Image:evening gowns)
A decade ago few people had even heard of bok choy, but now as the United States’ population further diversify, more and more people are seeing this vegetable in their daily diets.
But what is bok choy, exactly?
The leafy vegetable is also known as Chinese white cabbage, and it has been a staple in Asian food for centuries. Bok choy belongs to the same food group as vegetables such as broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, and turnips. And while this plant may not look like much, it has a high nutritional density.

According to WebMD, bok choy is loaded with vitamins A and C. One cup of cooked bok choy provides more than 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of vitamin A, and close to two-thirds the RDA of vitamin C. This leafy plant, commonly served in soups and stir-fry, also contains potassium, calcium, magnesium, vitamin B-6, vitamin K, and minerals such as phosphorus, zinc, sodium, copper, manganese, selenium, niacin, and choline.
But what does all this mean for your overall health?
Still not sold on bok choy by the nutrient list alone? Here are the top 5 reasons you need more of this vegetable in your diet:
Bone health: According to a report from MNT, bok choy contains some of the most important nutrients for bone health, including iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin K. Not only do these substances help build healthy muscle and connective tissue, some, like vitamin K have been linked to bone strength. Individuals with low vitamin K levels have been known to become more prone to bone fractures.
Cancer prevention: Bok choy belongs to the group of cruciferous vegetables have a lower risk of developing lung, prostate, colorectal and breast cancer. It contains folate, which helps protect DNA from mutations known to lead to cancer. Bok choy also contains selenium, a mineral that helps the liver detoxify the body and also decreases the growth rates of cancerous tumors.
Inflammation reduction: In addition to selenium, which also can reduce inflammation in the body, bok choy contains choline, a nutrient that helps maintain the structure of cellular membranes and control of inflammatory processes within the body.
Heart health: Bok choy contains potassium, calcium and magnesium, all compounds linked to naturally decreasing blood pressure. What’s more, bok choy contains vitamin C, vitamin B-6 and potassium which are all linked to a heart-healthy diet. One study found individuals who consumed 4,069 mg of potassium per day had a 49 percent lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease compared to those who consumed less potassium a day.

Skin health: The high vitamin C and A content of bok choy make it an excellent food for the skin. Not only do these vitamins help keep skin cells protected from everyday damage, they promote collagen product and skin renewal. Also read here:red carpet dresses

Annual Reno Gay Pride event returns

Downtown gets colorful Saturday as Reno Gay Pride invites people of every age, orientation and background to its 18th annual festival in Wingfield Park.
It’s not a rally; it’s not a march. It’s a celebration.
“What they’re celebrating is the uniqueness of themselves,” said Kevin Ray, an event organizer. “You’ll see a lot of smiles, you’ll see some wild outfits, you’ll see a lot of glitter and rainbow colors — and that’s exciting. They’re showing their pride, and it just makes you feel wonderful to see that energy.”
Ray said he feels an obligation to provide a climate of acceptance for others, in part because he has always enjoyed an especially supportive network of family and friends.
“For me, being gay was never an issue, and I feel it is so important to create that atmosphere for others who may be struggling with it,” he said. “I feel a responsibility to make sure that year after year, this event goes on for Northern Nevada.
“People are not defined solely on the basis of their orientation,” Ray said. “Reno Gay Pride empowers the individual to be part of the larger community.”
In August, Ray received a message via Reno Gay Pride’s Facebook page from a woman in rural Nevada who recently learned that her son is gay. Calling herself a “proud mom,” she wrote that she will accompany her son to Reno’s Gay Pride Festival for the first time this year.
“Each story is different for each person,” Ray said. “This event is for families. It is for everyone. Many come just to experience an atmosphere that I believe fosters a lot of strength in an individual, even after they leave.”
In deference to the goal of being all-inclusive, the festival is a PG-rated event.
“We want to keep it family-friendly,” he said. “We do not allow nudity. Likewise, our entertainers on stage are mindful that there are families in the audience. A lot of us may travel to San Francisco and attend Pride events there, but that’s not what Reno is about. This is our Northern Nevada community, and there are different expectations.
“Even our vendors are not allowed to display anything that’s inappropriate for a young person — or someone’s grandmother, for that matter.”
Vendors, including a diverse group of food vendors, will be set up throughout the park, and event sponsor Harrah’s Hotel & Casino will host a beer garden. All-day entertainment will include everything from drag performers to dancers. There’s also a fashion show this year.
And although Reno Gay Pride is a registered Nevada nonprofit corporation, the festival is not a fundraiser for the nonprofit. It does not solicit funds or accept donations — its goal is to create an event at which other nonprofits can raise funds.
“We create a day in the park where all nonprofit groups can raise money,” Ray said. “Whereas a small nonprofit might not be able to create such a large event, they can simply show up, raise their own money, and direct where their money goes.”
Arlington Avenue will be closed to traffic between First and Court streets, and entrance gates are available there. A third admission gate is on First Street near Java Jungle. A $5 entry fee helps off-set the cost of entertainment and city fees for park use. Kids with an accompanying parent attend for free.

“At the end of the night,” Ray said, “after the park is cleaned and the last vendor has left, the sense of satisfaction of having impacted and empowered so many individuals is priceless.”Also read here:green prom dresses uk

Is this the slickest wedding proposal video you will ever see?

(Image:pink prom dresses)
Nick Laughton took his fiancee Cherie Amner back to the university where they met – for a surprise wedding proposal.
The pair were students at Nottingham Trent University in 2006 and now live in Greenwich, London.
But Nick spent ten months creating a video, with cameos from the couple's friends, old clips of them and references to their time at the university.
He persuaded her to come back to Nottingham for a birthday party, then played the 11-minute video at the student's union bar, in Shakespeare Street, where they first met.
He then asked her to marry him and the party turned into a surprise engagement party.
"It was the perfect proposal," said Cherie. "I love surprising people but to have it done to me was amazing.
"The level of detail was incredible. We have an in-joke about a broken suitcase wheel and there was one in there."
"She was completely blown away," said Nick, 29, who studied furniture and product design. "It's about the only time in her life she's been speechless."
Nick said he needed to out-do Cherie's birthday surprise when she secretly got him ten days off work and took him to Vietnam. Friend Matt Wallace, owner of Janno Productions, which helped make the video, agreed to host his 'birthday party' while Nick told Cherie he was in Glasgow for work. "She didn't think it was that strange that a video came on at Matt's birthday," said Nick. "Then her friends started appearing. There are so many little references, she can watch it again and again and always find something new."
As Cherie watched, family and friends appeared from behind a fire door.
"When I was watching the video I refused to let myself believe it was a proposal," Cherie said. "It was only when my family and friends from home appeared that I believed it."
The video includes a dance by Cherie's cheerleading friends from her time as vice-chairman of the Trent Tigers squad.
Even the timing of the video was triggered by one of her favourite three songs - Dakota by the Stereophonics.
"It's that extra layer of detail that made it extra special," said Nick.

"I don't know what she's going to do next to better it."Read more here:evening dresses uk
